| Geographical Information Territory 20,200 sq. km Population 1,072,000 The Volyn region was created on December 4, 1939. It is situated in the northwestern part of Ukrainian Polissia. It borders on Poland in the west (the frontier length 135 km), on Republic of Belarus in the north (the frontier length 195 km), on the Rivne region in the east and Lviv region in the south. The region has a favorable geographical position; it is at the crossing of European trade roads. The roads between Kyiv, Warsaw and Berlin, the Baltic and Black Seas run through Volyn. The region comprises 3.3% of the territory of Ukraine. It stretches for 187 km from the north to the south, and 163 km from the east to the west. The region's population is 2.1% of the population of Ukraine where 52% is urban and 48% is rural. The Volyn region incorporates 4 cities of regional subordination, 7 towns of district subordination, 22 town settlements, 1050 rural settlements (villages), 16 districts and 378 rural councils. Mineral raw material potential of the region is characterized by the availability of coal, turf, chalk, brick tile clay, building sand in its bowels, their excavation being traditional. The natural gas field has been found in recent years in the territory of the Lokachi district, and development could completely meet the needs of the local population and regional industry for the next 10 years. There are also a number of deposits of native copper in the Ratniv district. A tender for the investment attraction being opened with the purpose of exploration and further industrial development. The northern part of the region is the zone of distribution of yellow and granular phosphorites which may be used as non-standard potassium phosphate limestone fertilizers. The region possesses reserves of sapropel (above 61,000,000 tons) which is used as a fertilizer. Some kinds of sapropel may be also used in veterinary, for feeding cattle and in medicine. There are about 9 deposits of carbonate raw materials with reserves of 29,000,000 tons. Natural conditions permit conducting works on their excavation with rather low material and technical expenditures and minimum harm for the environment. They also produce lime and carbide. A deposit of basalt on the frontier with the Rivne region has been explored. The Volyn region is the land of wonderful unique nature. There are 220 lakes, the Svityaz' lake being the largest one in Ukraine. There are also 130 rivers and 32% of the territory are covered with forests. The region numbers 380 reserve objects. The lakes, rivers, forests, medicinal muds, mineral waters, hunting, fishing, all create the necessary conditions for the development of tourism industry, full value rest and recreation of the population. |
Industry Machine building, light, food and wood working industries, that of building materials are the leading branches of industry in the region. They make 85% of the total amount of industrial production. The industry development peculiarity is that the great number of large enterprises of machine building, light and chemical industry were created to meet the requirements of the former USSR as a whole, and only 25-30% of their product are needed for Ukraine. The region plants produce rolling bearings, coal, meters for controlling temperature and technological processes, water meters, machines for cattle breeding and fodder production, cars, electric equipment, goods of plastic materials and footwear. Industrial enterprises are mainly distributed in the cities of Volodymyr- Volynsky, Kovel, Lutsk, Novovolynsk and in Gorokhiv, Kivertsi, Kovel, Manevychi, Rozhishche districts. The region industry has 227 enterprises, representing almost all leading branches and employing 62,000 workers. In 1997 industrial output was 465,000,000 hryvna which is less than 1% of its total volume in Ukraine. At the same time the enterprises of Volyn produced 45% of the total volume of soft roofing materials, 10% of cardboard, 18% of bearings, 3.7% of butter, 3.8% of granulated sugar, 4.4% of meat, etc. Machine building is specialized in producing agricultural machines, bearings, electromechanical, automobile industry, instrument engineering. Many unique machine building enterprises, making high quality production, are situated in the region. They are: OSC "Lutsky Bearding Plant", Lutsk OSC "Electrothermometry" (produces temperature meters, water meters, gas pressure regulators), Novovolynsk OSC "Osnastka" (special technological equipment having no analogues in Ukraine and CIS countries), OSC "Lutsk Automobile Plant", etc. Light industry, incorporating 28 enterprises (practically every fifth one) possesses essential production potential. Such stock companies as Lutsk as the silk factory "Voltex", "Synthetics" (synthetic leather and non woven fabrics), "Lutsk Footwear Factory". Unfortunately the further operation of Novovolynsk OSC "Notex", specialised in production of wool yarn and of flax plants, is problematic because of the limited sales of the wool yarn in Ukraine and lack of new materials for utilization of 10 flax plants in the region. The Lutsk integrated works producing cardboard and prepared roofing paper which has begun producing the import substituting cover cardboard is a leader in the industry of building materials. But to complete works on creation of its output of 10,000 tons/year the enterprise needs certain investments. Food and processing industry makes above 50% in the volume of the region industrial production and essentially influences the work of industry as a whole. The food products are made by 77 enterprises, or 34% of their total quantity. Economic Complex |

The Volynian meat breed of cows has been selected in the production selection center of meat cattle growing "Zaria" (Kovel district). A new variety of winter rye "Pallada" with potential yield of 55-60 hundredweight/hectare (c/ha) has been selected as well. Agriculture is the second, as to its weight, branch of the region economy. Collective enterprises (431) and private farms (556) cultivate 1,065,900 ha and 9,200 ha of lands, respectively, including 687 100 ha and 8,300 ha of arable land. Besides, individuals possess 140,900 ha of arable land. The specific weight of cattle breeding is 52%, plant growing 48% of the total amount of production. The public sector makes 32% of production, individuals and private farms 68%. The gross yield of grain, including the private sector, made 635,500 tons in 1997 or by 93 400 tons more than in 1996, 20.4 c of grain from one hectare (17.1 hundredweight in 1996) being threshed out. The yield of sugar beet was 176 c/ha against 203 c/ha in 1996. The yield of potato in all categories of farms was 797,100 tons, including that in the private sector- 766,900 tons or 95% of the total amount. In 1997 - 72 100 tons of cattle and poultry meat were produced in the region as well as 592 000 tons of milk and 153 300,000 eggs which, respectively, makes up 85.91 and 89% of the level of 1996.
