The Struten Institute (SI) is a nonprofit organization concerned with rescuing (via technology transfer)
the scientific and technical infrastructure of post-independence Ukraine.
The considerable progress that SI has made in the area of enhanced communications may be of
especial interest to those of your readers anxious to do business with Ukraine but feeling pinched by communications
difficulties.
An integrated English/Ukrainian translation and letter (and greeting card)
expediting service is available to SI members. Under this scheme, an SI member (individual or corporate) wishing to
send an expedited letter or card types his/her message directly onto a form on SI's web site. The form is
sent to SI's office where it is pre-processed and then relayed to Ukraine.
There it is translated (by Ukrainian university students), printed, placed
into an addressed envelope and mailed to the recipient using Ukraine's internal postal service. It is estimated that 5 - 7 days after a SI
member has clicked on the "Submit" button, the recipient has the translated letter
(or card) in hand. The cost of this service is US$ 5.00 for the first page
of the letter and $2.50 for each additional page. Cards only have enough room on them for one page of text and so their cost is US$ 5.00 each.
For those for whom the Ukrainian language poses no barrier, SI has just instituted another
expeditied service. SI members can FAX their Ukrainian-language letters (up to ten pages in length) to a dedicated FAX
number here in the U.S. [(760) 462-2133] or in the United Kingdom [(0870)
121-5424]. The letters may be typed or even handwritten, so long as they are
legible and contain the author's SI membership number on either the cover sheet or the front page. Persons making use of this service from within
continental Europe will probably find it more convenient to FAX to the U.K.
number [44 (870) 121-5424] rather than making a transatlantic call.
Regardless of their origin, all such Faxes will be converted into electronic
form and will be delivered to SI for pre-processing. They will then be relayed to Ukraine for printing and mailing. The cost of this service is US$
2.00/letter (up to ten pages).
The Struten Institute will translate and/or transmit all letters in good faith. However, SI has neither
any interest in intrigues nor willingness to participate in any sort of illegal and/or questionable activity. Further,
since confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, these services are not suitable
for highly sensitive documents
