FED

Production and repair of aircraft hydraulic devices, etc.

In General

Founded in 1927, FED has broad experience in the production and repair of hydraulic devices and fuel control units for aviation applications. For most of its history, it was one of the most respected companies in the Soviet air and space industry. It has also enjoyed substantial success in developing plumbing equipment, optical goods and mining machinery.  Despite shifting economic and political winds, FED has maintained a long, formal and successful relationship with the Sundstrand Corporation of Rockford, Illinois.

Organized as a consortium of independent companies, the combined organization now employs nearly 5,000 people.  It has revenues of $22 million (a comparable U.S. company would have revenues in the $200 million range).

Products and Services

FED’s systems and products are built into virtually all fixed and rotary wing aircraft made or operated in the territory of the former Soviet Union.  Their products are also found in aircraft built and used in countries that traded heavily with the USSR (a total of about 50 countries).  FED continues to supply spare and replacement parts for those aircraft.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, FED has not remained only in the aviation market. It has also entered new markets. It has created innovative approaches in pneumatic braking systems for railroad lines, as well as hydraulic units for ground-based machinery and mining equipment. The enterprise produces optical devices (cameras, lenses, overhead projectors) and consumer plumbing accessories as well.

FED’s goals for the future include finding a globally-engaged partner to create a joint venture to:

  • Market aircraft contract maintenance services

  • Design and produce optical equipment and devices, individual heating systems with specified degree of efficiency

  • Discuss the joint manufacture of electronic fuel control systems for broad aircraft-industry applications within CIS

  • Set up maintenance and perform services to U.S. aircraft in operation within former Soviet Union

  • Develop and market energy-saving devices for the consumer-goods and railway lines

  • Find an investor for designed ecological projects devoted to the water treatment and waste management industries
