Institute of Stock Raising

Seeking to learn about livestock operations

In General

The Institute of Stock-Raising is a state-owned enterprise descended from Ukraine’s collectives.  It characterizes itself as a scientific organization focused on agricultural technology associated with milk, beef and pork production as well as animal forage.

The Institute is active in genetics and in the selective breeding of livestock.  They employ 260 people, more than half of whom are scientists (including 50 PhD’s).

The Institute manages five experimental farms on 15 hectares.  Their livestock includes 2,600 cattle, 2,000 pigs and 2,000 sheep. They also raise various crops on their land.

Plans and Concerns

The Institute is looking ahead to the impact of Ukraine’s recently-changed land ownership laws.  This evolutionary step in the privatization process will mean new challenges and opportunities.  Changing from an agricultural institute to an agricultural business is the focus of their concern.

Goals for Ohio Trip

Their goals for the trip to Ohio are to learn how livestock production operations are organized in the United States, what techniques are being used for making forage and feeding livestock, and how small U.S. farms use agricultural equipment. They are also interested in finding a partner to develop a modern dairy. From an educational perspective, the Institute would like to establish contact with similar organizations in Ohio for an interchange of experience and technology.
