In GeneralPrimarily, Stepok is a large pedigreed cattle farm, but it produces a wide variety of agricultural products. An open join stock company, it operates within an area of 11,000 hectares (27,160 acres) about 150 miles from the city of Kharkiv. Descended from the collective farms of Ukraine’s past, it is one of many similar large farming organizations. It maintains approximately 1,000 cattle, 5,000 sheep, 300 pigs, 70 horses and 50 families of bees. It employs about 610 people. They are proud of their seven John Deere tractors and 14 combines. Distinguishing CharacteristicsStepok prides itself on its high yields and the success of its intensive farming. Unlike some other similar farms, Stepok pay its bills and enjoys a reasonable level of financial success. Future PlansOne important area of development for Stepok is making the transition from wheat-based feeds for livestock to corn-based approaches. They are also experimenting with soybean crops for a variety of applications. Their people have traveled to many other countries to learn new technologies and methods for increasing yields and expanding into new markets. Goals for Ohio TripStepok’s goals for the Ohio trip are to connect with other agricultural businesses to learn more about latest developments in soybean and corn hybridization. At some point, the company would like to create a joint venture to improve their soybean production and processing and to enter the international market. |
