Overview This is one of the largest fur outer garment manufacturing companies in the former Soviet Union. Founded in 1935, it has 1,110 employees in 19 factories and 6 retail outlets. It is fully integrated from tanning, leather production and fur processing to garment and hat styling, sewing, blocking and steam setting. The firm tans and processes more than two million skins per year, including sheep, karakul, mink, rabbit, fox and polecat. Operations The company has advanced pelt and leather tanning technology and equipment and all pelts are received in their raw condition. The skins come from the CIS including Kazakstan, Tartarstan and Russia. The required supply of skins is irregular and the company has buyers at the source. Dyes come from Sweden and cloth and the lining materials from Ukraine. Cutting, sewing, and assembly of coats, hats, and purses are done in separate buildings. In some cases, departments are devoted to making products from a single type of fur. The sewing equipment is the heavy duty type required for skins and leather. The machines are mostly from Ukraine and Russia, with some from Germany and Spain. The newest is five years old. Cutting and sewing operations are in progressive steps on machines and at work stations arranged in rows. The volume of work does not warrant bundle systems, except in the case of fur hats for the military. The cost of a coat is 50% materials and 50% for wages, utilities, profit, and overhead. It used to be 90% and 10%, but the energy expense and cost of dyes have risen dramatically since independence. The pelt cutting and the sewing areas of the factory are well laid out and most operations are done at a fast pace. The production was relatively efficient, considering that most items were essentially custom made. There was no central filtering system to clear the air of fur particles. The plant producing leather coats and hand bags had heavy duty sewing machines arranged in rows, but individual workers assembled most parts of a given style or custom product. Conveyors had been used when company output was higher. The plant devoted to fur hat production was well furnished with modern sewing, blocking and steaming equipment. The company has its own large utilities building. Marketing is done directly to the military and the government. The firm has ten retail stores in Ukraine with five in Kharkiv. |
