Solar Energy in the Crimea

On the Program of Wind Farm Construction up to the Year 2010

Ukraine has a high potential for wind power generation in its southern regions near the Azov and the Black Sea. Here, the annual mean wind velocities range from 5.5 to 6.2 m/s while the mean annual operating time may be at about 5,000 h.

A program for development of wind power generation and construction of windmills in the Crimea for 1996-2010 was adopted. That the Crimea was selected as the priority area is due to a number of considerations, namely:

  • its abundant resources for tourism and leisure industry that puts stringent environmental requirements to power generation,
  • a desperate lack of energy, only 8 % of the supply being covered by local facilities,
  • highly favorable conditions for wind power development,
  • existence of well developed electric systems,
  • availability of land for installing a number of wind farms, each up to 400 MW in capacity,
  • existence of domestic industry for complete manufacture of windmills, etc.

Aktash Wind Farm in the east of the peninsula uses 11 AVE-250 S type windmills manufactured by Yuzhnoe Research and Production Association. Of these, 5 units are operated in a pilot test mode while a 500-kW and a 220-kW unit are under construction. The prospective overall capacity is limited to 50 MW.

Donuzlav Wind Farm uses 53 107-kW units of USW-56-100 type manufactured in Ukraine on order from Windenergo, a US-Ukraine joint venture. The overall capacity is planned at 50 MW.

Chernomorsk Wind Farm has 4 AVE-250 S windmills.

A 6-unit wind farm equipped with USW-56-100 machines is operated at Vorob'evo. The Program envisages 5 more farms totaling to 200 MW at Saki, Dzhankoi, Mirnoe, Presnye Vody and Vostochnyi Krym.

If successful, the Program will raise the total windmill capacity in the Crimea to 480 MW to cover one third of the peninsula's demand and save 290,000 t equivalent fuel per year.

The Program also allocated about 9,000,000 hryvnias for a wind power center to be set up at Schelkino. The Center's tasks will be:

  • gathering, processing and exchange of information,
  • preparation of legislative acts and technical specifications,
  • meteorological observations and selection of wind farm sites,
  • design engineering,
  • testing and certification of windmills, and
  • advertising and exhibition services.
